Preserving Water Spring through a Traditional Ceremony
Indonesia is a country rich in culture and civilization. Indonesia also blessed with many natural resources all around the country. Due to human activities, some natural resources are now in danger. In a village in Yogyakarta, there is a traditional ceremony annually held to keep the resources save. The people of Clapar held a ceremony to save their main water source.
Residents of Clapar in Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta, held a “Nawu Sendang” (sendang is a Javanese for spring) ceremony to preserve the living environment. The ceremony was held as a way to preserve the cultural heritage of the ancestor. This traditional ceremony is also intended to maintain the balance of nature and humans, especially for the preservation of the spring that gave prosperity and peace to the locals.
This annual ceremony is believed by the local people to bring prosperity to them. There are some rituals need to be done before the ceremony is started. The local Clapar citizen will work together to clean up their environment, they will also give offerings at the Rejo Spring. Moreover, there would also be a Peak Tayub dancing. They believed that they can protect their source of living by doing this traditional ceremony.
