Balinese Traditional Kind of Song: Gegendingan

Gegendingan is a collection of sentences that are sung. Its contents are generally short, and simple. It is truly free to sing it, because there is no knot. Between each sentence should not have any meaning or understandings that shape the story, and sometimes the sentences are formed from words that have no clear meaning.

The Balinese know three kinds of Gegendingan: Gending Rare, Gending Jejangeran, and Gending Sanghyang. Gending Rare is a type of Gegendingan that mostly tells story about children and children play. The lyrics are simple, dynamic, and cheerful.

Gending Jejangeran is similar to Gending Rare. It is usually sung by two groups of female and male singer replying to each other. While the last kind of Gegendingan, Gending Sanghyang, is usually used in ceremony or sacred procession.
